I want to show news articles in my DCG and don't want to have to attach images as each news item is posted (automatically). Can I have a bunch of images in my default images folder assigned to one category and then have them selected randomly? (e.g., 1a.jpg, 1b.jpg, etc. for category #1

Or is there another easy, obvious way to do this that slipped by this NooB?

No, there's no easy way to do this other than to hack the plugin. :-/
