Ok, understood.
This would work best with the Category method, although it could, theoretically, work with the Multi Option and Pages method too. It's going on the to-do list.
Cheers,
Ade.
Thanks Ade .. that is very cool!
Cheers,
Gil

Abe,
Thanks for a great product! I really like the recent updates like auto slidepane descriptions.
My requests:
◊ A Gallery Method to mix pages and category/posts.
◊ Ability to use folder name for dfcg-image such that random images are displayed
◊ Pull DCG out of Settings and give it a stand-alone side bar menu
Thanks,
Dan.

Hi Dan,
Thanks for your suggestions. Glad you like the plugin.
Item #1: I could allow the Pages Method to be used for both Page and Post ID's. This would allow mixing of Posts and Pages, but would need to be updated in the Settings whenever the user adds a new Post. Mixing Pages and Categories gets rather complex – I'll have a think about it.
Item #2: Could you explain this one in some more detail please? Let's say I had selected One Category method and specified my Feature category and 5 posts to be displayed. Would you expect all 5 images to be randomly pulled from a specified folder?
Item #3: Already planned for v3.2.

RE: Slide Pane Descriptions
Hi Ade,
When set to auto, could you make it behave so
that when it is in auto mode, UNLESS the dfcg-desc custom field exists,
it shows the first X number of characters.
So the logic in auto mode would be:
look for dfcg-desc custom field,
if it exists, show that, if it doesn't exist,
use the first X number of characters from the article?
What do you think?
Thanks and cheers,
Gil

Hi Gill,
Yes, that's possible, but some users don't want to use any description, so I would have to add a "No description" option. I'll add it to the v3.2 to-do list.
Thanks for the suggestion.

Hi Gil,
Very close.
Here's what will appear in the Post and Page edit screen (some CSS tidying is still needed):

Logically, since it will now be possible to deal with the custom fields here rather than in the usual custom field edit boxes, it makes sense to convert the existing custom field names to:
_dfcg-image
_dfcg-desc
_dfcg-link
The addition of the underscore means that they will no longer display in the normal Custom Field edit boxes.
I'm finalising an upgrade routine which will do this automatically. I won't release this until I'm 100% sure it works properly. If you fancy testing it out on a test site, let me know and I'll send you the upgrade.

It would be really cool to be able to use your Facebook Fan Page Photo Albums… where you can create an album on your Facebook Fan Page to show or show random photos from all the albums or specify which albums etc…
Thought on this?

Hi,
Frankly, you're probably better off looking at something like NextGen gallery, which is a proper photo gallery plugin. The DCG is more for displaying images linked to posts.

Hi Ade,
Very cool! I am happy to test it out on an MU 2.91 site and if time permits on a WP 2.91
I think you have my e-mail address – I assume I will just copy the files over the existing subdir?
Question – does the "exclude this post from gallery" work independant of main settings? What I mean is, if there is no check mark there, will it show up in the gallery irespective of what the categories are set to in the main settings?
Cheers,
Gil

Hi Gil,
Here's the latest screenshot:

The "Exclude" checkbox only does something if the main plugin Settings would normally select this Post. In other words, it's only for excluding, not for including. Unchecked means that IF the Settings Page is selecting this Post, this Post will appear in the gallery as normal.
Yes, thanks, I have your email address.

Maybe there's an easy way to do this and I'm clueless, but new window options for links would be great.
Use case: I have an external agency that needs to be featured but they have their own site — and I don't want to drive the user away from our site completely.

Hi,
Thanks for the suggestion, I'll give it some thought. It wouldn't be a difficult mod to do and, if I do it, it will be on the list for 3.3 (3.2 is going through final testing and is in feature freeze).

- Feature: Added Metabox to Post/Page Editor screen to handle custom fields
- Feature: Added _dfcg-exclude postmeta to allow specific exclusion of a post from multi-option or one-category output
- Feature: Added postmeta upgrade routine to convert dfcg- custom fields to _dfcg-
- Enhance: Added text-align left to h2 in jd.gallery.css for wider theme compatibility

Would it be possible to add an option that turns the exclude from gallery option on by default?
I post from the iPhone wordpress client which doesn't give me the opertunity to turn the flag off or to specify an image (I doubt any posting clients can) and this causes me issues as every post results in an error displayed on screen.
On a related note it might be better if the code simply skipped posts for which there are no image specified instead of adding error entries. If I make a mistake and forget to specify an image I don't really want this flagged up to the user, I'd rather it just silently hid the bad entry until I fix it. I realise that your less likely to notice the mistake if its silent but I'd rather miss having a feature post image up than display a big ERROR message on the page for the user to see (it looks unprofesional). This would also help with old posts that were created before the plugin was added and thus have no meta-data.

Hi there,
I've just been reading the suggestions and responses in this topic and I think the work you are doing on this plugin is awesome! I've been looking for a featured content gallery for a while and this is by the far the best I've seen so far.
If there was one thing on my wishlist for this plugin (and I think it's been mentioned before but I'd just like to second it), I think the option to use the first image in the post as the gallery image would make this plugin complete. The custom settings you have created are great, but I think especially for bloggers who post via email or some XML-RPC protocol client, automatically "grabbing" the first image in the post and using it in the gallery would save a considerable amount of time and keep the gallery as dynamic as possible. If the plugin just centered the image or resized the width to equal the width of the content gallery (the height would just resize itself proportionally), then I'd see no problem with the images looking weird.
Once again, thanks for this plugin! I look forward to future updates!
Cheers,
Aonghas

Hi,
Thanks for the nice feedback. Appreciated!
Yes, it's very likely that I will be adding this capability in a future version. Can't promise a timescale, but it's on the to do list.
